There are two kinds of article: هنالك نوعان من أدوات التعريف

1.     The Definite Article: The. المعرف

2.     The Indefinite Article: A and An.الغير معرف

The definite article is used: اداة التعريف تستعمل

1.     When the noun is the only one of its kind.إذا كان الأسم فريد من نوعه

2.     When the noun is being mentioned of the second time.إذا ذكر الأسم للمرة الثانية

3.     When the noun describes the adjectives in the Superlative Degree.إذا وصف الأسم حالة في درجة التمييز

4.     When the noun following it is the name of an ocean, river, …إذا جاء بعده اسم محيط، نهر الخ.

Example:

The sun is shining.الشمس مشرقة

I have a banana and an apple. I gave the banana to John.أنا لدي موز وتفاح وقد أعطيت الموز إلى جون.

He is the fastest runner.هو العداء الأسرع

The Mediterranean Sea is rough today.بحر المتوسط هائج اليوم

The Indefinite article is used:اداة الغير معرفة تسعمل في

1.     When the noun is an indefinite (not specific) singular.عندما يكون الأسم غير محدد اي مفرد

2.     With the numbers.مع الأرقام

3.     A is used before a consonant sound, an is used before a vowel sound.

نستعمل a قبل الكلمات التي تبدأ بحرف ساكن، ونستعمل an قبل الكلمات التي تبدأ بحرف علة.

Example:

·        A dog makes a good pet.الكلب حيوان أليف جيد

·        He walks a hundred kilometers a day.هو يمشي مئات الكيلومترات في اليوم

Note: Articles are not used when a speaker is making a generalization (plural or singular). Example: I like music.لا نستعمل أدوات التعريف عندما يعمم المتكلم اي لا يذكر ان كان هاذا الشيئ مفرد او مثنى مثل أنا أحب الموسيقى

Fruit is good for you.الفواكه جيدة بالنسبة لك

Parrots are good pets.الببغاء حيوان أليف.
